7 Safety Tips to Keep in Mind on Forklift Safety Day

Posted by Margaret Harvey on Jun 13, 2023

Forklift Safety Day is recognized on the second Tuesday in June every year and provides the opportunity for industries that rely on forklifts to refresh their training and reevaluate their safety guidelines.

Because safety is a core value of The Shippers Group, this is one day we don’t take lightly. Forklifts present serious potential for accidents and injuries in the workplace, so proper training for our employees is essential. To ensure a safe environment for our employees and to minimize accidents or incidents, all associates who operate forklifts are trained and certified before handling the equipment and undergo retraining every year to avoid becoming complacent.

In addition to training and certification for forklift operators, it’s also important to educate on common safety hazards and best practices. For those operating lifts, conducting training, or in charge of safety guidelines, here are some essential Forklift Safety Tips to consider:

  1. Load Capacity: Do not exceed the forklift's load capacity as indicated by the manufacturer. Overloading a forklift can compromise its stability and increase the risk of tipping over.
  2. Stability: Always secure the load properly before moving and keep the center of gravity low. Ensure the load is evenly distributed on the forks and use appropriate attachments like pallet clamps or straps when necessary.
  3. Proper Visibility: Maintain clear visibility by keeping the forklift's mast lowered when not moving loads. Use mirrors and look in the direction of travel to avoid collisions with obstacles, pedestrians, or other vehicles.
  4. Speed and Maneuvering: Adhere to speed limits, especially in areas with pedestrian traffic. Slow down when approaching corners, ramps, or narrow aisles. Avoid sudden stops or changes in direction.
  5. Communication: Use audible signals (e.g., horns) and visual indicators (e.g., lights, signs) to communicate with pedestrians and other operators. Establish clear hand signals or communication methods when working in a team.
  6. Parking: Always park forklifts in designated areas with the forks lowered to the ground, the parking brake engaged, and the engine turned off. Never leave a forklift unattended with the engine running.
  7. Inspection & Maintenance: An inspection should be performed before each working shift and if a problem is identified, proper personnel should be notified immediately, and the equipment should be taken out of service until repaired. Additionally, forklifts should be maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Forklifts are powerful and versatile machines used in our industry, but they can pose significant risks if not operated safely. While these are all general safety tips that can help to avoid accidents, it’s crucial that you follow any specific regulations and guidelines established by your workplace.
